Gardaí have appealed to the public for information following a serious assault and a separate double-stabbing in Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, last night.

A 27-year-old man was seriously injured after he was assaulted with another man while walking down New Street at about 3.30am.

Gardaí said they were assaulted by a number of men.

Both were removed to Castlebar General Hospital to be treated for their injuries. A 32-year-old man was released from hospital a short time later. The other man was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin with serious head injuries.

A short time later a second incident occurred at The Neale Road when two males were assaulted by a number of men.

Both men received stab wounds to their necks and were taken to Castlebar General Hospital for treatment.

It is understood gardaí believe both assaults were carried out by the same men.
