Four Donegal men were charged at Donegal District Court yesterday as a result of the Carty investigation report on alleged Garda corruption in the county.
Three of the men were arrested the previous evening. They were charged with making false statements to gardai and wasting Garda time on a date or dates between November 29th, 1996, and July 7th, 1997.
Mr Noel McBride (29), of Figart, Raphoe, replied "Nothing to say" when the 10 charges were read to him at Letterkenny Garda Station, Sgt Fergus Treanor told the court. He is charged with making false statements tending to show that an offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm had been committed by another person on November 29th, 1996; December 4th, 1996; March 18th, 1997; May 4th, 1997; and July 7th, 1997.
He was also charged that on the same dates he made a false statement tending to show he had information relating to inquiries by the Garda.
Mr William Doherty (28), of Doorable, Manorcunningham, replied "No" when charged with each of the two offences relating to November 29th, 1996.
Mr Roderick Donnelly (26), of Ballylennon, St Johnston, was also charged that he committed the same two offences on January 20th, 1997.
A fourth man, Mr Derrick Connolly (30), of Raphoe, was arrested at 11.50 a.m. yesterday and brought to Donegal town Garda station, where he was charged.
Judge John O'Donnell was told that Mr Connolly made no reply when charged with making a false statement to gardai on January 30th, 1997, regarding careless driving by another person and wasting Garda time.
All four were remanded in custody with consent to bail. Books of evidence are being prepared, and all four will be dealt with by indictment on the instructions of the DPP, Det Supt Tadhg Foley told the court.
