Four men were injured in an attack in Newcastle, Co Down, early this morning.

Four men were injured in an attack in Newcastle, Co Down, early this morning.

One of the men was shot in the leg, and the others suffered "superficial injuries" in the incident on Burrendale Park Road, police said.

Officers are trying to trace a Nissan Terrano seen in the area around the time of the attack shortly before 3am.

SDLP MP, Eddie McGrady, condemned the shooting, calling it a disturbing, irresponsible and brutal act that was not characteristic of the area.

"There can be no justification for the use of a firearm in such a reckless way in a built-up estate with many families sleeping in close proximity to this incident," the South Down MP said.

"We can only be thankful that this gun was not fired or ricochet in the direction of a bedroom," he added.
