Four projects to get €70,000 for urban renewal

Towns in counties Galway, Cork, Tipperary and Dublin will benefit from extra funding announced by the Minister for the Environment this morning.

Mr Roche said an extra €280,000 was being granted towards four urban and village renewal projects, each of which will get €70,000. So far €11 million has been allocated for such projects around the State. It is cofunded by the European Union.

In Ballinasloe, Co Galway, a riverside park is being developed by Galway County Council. It provides two new pedestrian bridges across the river linking existing public spaces on either side of the river.

Cork City Council is building a pedestrian bridge and walkway across the River Lee in Mardyke, while Tipperary County Council is upgrading the Fair Green area in Carrick-on-Suir to incorporate a playground, car park, street furniture and soft landscaping.

In Dublin, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is working on the Sandycove/Newtownsmith coastal improvement scheme. The project, east of Dún Laoghaire Baths, includes the renewal of the guard-rails and new public lighting.
