Four skiers were killed today Italian Alpine resort of Sarre, near the northern city of Aosta, when an avalanche buried them in snow.

Rescuers did not release the nationalities of the dead or of six others injured when the avalanche hit early today at 2,500 metres (8,250 feet).

Rescuers were quick to arrive on the scene but were unable to save the four. The six injured were hospitalised in the city of Aosta.

Two skiers were killed by an avalanche in the Italian Alps last weekend.

Many areas of the Alpine range have been under high avalanche alert due to recent heavy snowfalls after mild temperatures.
