The soldiers, from a unit based in Tikrit, were killed near the town of Samarra, 100 kilometres north of Baghdad, the statement said.

More than 60 US troops have died in Iraq this month, including 14 in a transport vehicle who were killed by a powerful roadside bomb near Haditha, west of Baghdad.

More than 1,860 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq - and many thousands of more severely injured.
