Political opponents of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika said massive fraud marred the North African country's presidential election today.
A spokesman for Mr Ali Benflis, the main challenger to the incumbent Mr Bouteflika, said legal appeals would be lodged. "We have noticed massive fraud during this election," the spokesman, Ali Mimouni, told Reuters. He did not elaborate.
The vote was seen as a turning point for the future of democracy in a Muslim country seeking to erase traumas of a decade of civil war and Islamic fundamentalism.
