At least 30 people were injured when a freak tornado swept through the Cypriot coastal city of Limassol yesterday.

The whirlwind swept in from the sea and hit facilities at Limassol's new port, tearing metal transport containers off trucks, damaging buildings and felling trees, witnesses said.

Hospital officials said they treated about 30 people slightly injured by shards of glass and other flying objects.

"It was like the force of God upon us . . . I've never seen anything like it," one Limassol resident told Cypriot television.
