Christmas trees can be dropped off for recycling at hundreds of sites throughout the State this month. Some sites have already opened, and many more will be in operation from this weekend.
All local authorities are providing a free Christmas tree disposal service this year.
Opening periods vary from one council to another, but some will be open until the end of January.
Dublin City Council will also be operating a pilot kerbside collection of Christmas trees in Rathmines, Sandymount, Ringsend, Ballsbridge, Cabra, Ashtown and Drumcondra.
Householders in those areas can buy tags at local retail outlets for €3.50 and tie them to their Christmas trees.
They can then be left out for collection on the normal weekly refuse collection day. Tags are available in the majority of retail outlets in those areas, according to a spokesman for the city council.
A similar service is not available for the whole of Dublin city because it is a pilot project, the spokesman explained.
"Those areas in Dublin city that are not directly served are adjacent to the drop-off points. Next year we will consider expanding the service," he said.
According to Repak, the discarded packaging compliance scheme, the average household used more than the weight of an adult in packaging over the Christmas holiday period.
Repak, in conjunction with local authorities, has set up 90 designated "green Christmas" recycling centres which accept glass, cans and packaging as well as Christmas trees.
