Only just over half of the French public wants a victory for the US-British alliance in the Iraqi war, according to a poll in Le Mondenewspaper today.

Fifty-three per cent of respondents answered yes when asked if they wanted "deep-down a victory for the US and the English," against 33 per cent who said they did not and 14 per cent who gave no response, according to the IPSOS survey.

Seventy-four per cent felt that President Jacques Chirac had "not gone too far in his opposition to the US," against 23 per cent who thought he had.

On the fall-out from the conflict, 44 per cent thought the most important would be "the consequences for world peace," 31 per cent "the humanitarian consequences" and 21 per cent "the consequences for terrorism".

Seventy-two per cent said the United Nations should be in charge of the country when the war is over; 23 per cent said the United States and Britain should keep control.
