Playwright Brian Friel and Dublin’s Gate Theatre are today celebrating winning a prestigious critics award at the Edinburgh International Festival.
The Gate Friel Season was commended with an Herald Angel Award for the superb staging of three works.
The respected Angels are given to the best of the festival’s performers, venues and backstage crew who impress a distinguished panel of arts critics.
Minister for Arts Martin Cullen congratulated Mr Friel, Michael Colgan, the directors, actors and crew on the renowned award.
“The win is a collective triumph for this acclaimed trilogy of Friel plays and follows on the success of the productions earlier this year at the Sydney Festival,” said Mr Cullen.
“The success of the Gate Friel Season is another fine example of the impact of our cultural creativity internationally and the ability of companies like the Gate to produce world-class theatre.”
The Gate Friel Season was programmed by the Gate this year in recognition of the 80th birthday of the playwright.
It comprised of three plays - Faith Healer, Afterplay and The Yalta Game- which toured Edinburgh and Sydney with the support of Culture Ireland
Mr Cullen also congratulated Irish theatre company Guna Nua, who last week won the Carol Tambor Award at Edinburgh Festival Fringe for Little Gem.
