AUSTRIA:AUSTRIAN WOMAN Elisabeth Fritzl has broken her silence, nearly three weeks after escaping 24 years of imprisonment and rape by her father, to thank the public for their support.

Rather than a normal press release, Ms Fritzl (42) issued a statement on a poster decorated with rainbows, hearts and the outlines of her hands and of her two sons, Stefan and Felix.

"We would like to express our gratitude to all of you for sympathising with our fate," she wrote in curly, child-like script. "Your compassion helps us a lot to cope with this difficult time and shows us that there are also good and honest people. We hope the time will come for us when we can find our way back into normal life again!"
