A man was arrested today following the discovery of a fuel laundering plant in a cattle shed close to the South Armagh border.
The man was questioned by Revenue & Customs officers after police uncovered the laundering plant at Camlough.
Beehive tanks, filtration units and cat litter capable of laundering fuel was seized.
Samples taken from the residue at the site showed laundered diesel had been present.
HM Revenue & Customs assistant director of specialist Investigations, Mike Connolly said: We detected this plant at an early stage so it is not possible to quantify how much laundered fuel it would be capable of producing.
“What is certain, however, is that laundered fuel had been present recently.”
Fuel laundering was a danger to the local community and the environment, and the toxic by-product was difficult and expensive to dispose of safely, he said.
“This is why I would urge members of the public if they know of any fuel misuse or suspicious activities, please call the HMRC hotline on 0800 59 5000,” he added.
The arrested man was later released on report while investigations continued.
