Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori said yesterday he "wanted to regularise" his stay in Japan "without seeking political asylum", but added he had not made a final decision on how long he would stay.

The Peruvian president, who announced his intention to resign from Tokyo on Sunday, was speaking at his first press conference since arriving in the Japanese capital on Friday, on what was originally supposed to be a stopover of a few hours between connecting flights.

Speaking in Spanish during his seven-minute appearance, he told reporters in the garden of the New Otani hotel, where he has been staying in a heavily-guarded luxury suite, that he had not decided what he was going to do next. "I will make up my mind in the next few days," he said.

Asked how long he intended to stay in Japan, his ancestral homeland, he said: "I still have no preconceived plan."
