Tens of thousands of full time carers are set to benefit from a €1,000 respite grant under plans outlined today by the Government.
The Minister for Social Affairs, Seamus Brennan, said the increased and extended Respite Care Grant will entitle more than 30,000 full-time carers to a €1,000 payment in recognition of their valued role in society this year.
The grant has been increase from from €835 and will be extended to cover all those providing full time assistance to an elderly or disabled person, regardless of their means, he said.
More than 23,500 people in receipt of the Carer's Allowance and Carer's Benefit support schemes will receive the grant along with the anticipated 9,000 additional carers who will qualify in 2005 following the extension of the support measure.
Mr Brennan said he was committed to helping the cause of carers.
"Carers make a valued and valuable contribution to Irish society through their dedication and sacrifice.
"I want that work to be recognised and acknowledged through increased benefits and practical support measures.
"In this regard, a break from caring is one of the greatest needs identified by family carers," he said.
The new package unveiled by the minister today is worth €36 million in total.
