A Dublin funeral home has introduced technology to allow people to attend services virtually via Skype.

The Haven on Crumlin Road, Dublin, which will host civil and religious services, opened yesterday. It has been fitted with audiovisual and internet technology.

Massey Bros managing director Freddie Maguire said the new facility meant that people who were unable to attend a service could still be there via the internet.

“It’s not always possible for people to travel at short notice to attend a funeral and there aren’t many people in Ireland who don’t have loved ones or friends overseas.”

Mr Maguire said the venue would cater to those who wanted either a civil or religious service. “Already, we are seeing approximately 10 per cent of the families we look after requesting civil funerals for their loved ones.

“It is important to us that they have a place in which they can mark the passing of a loved one in a dignified and respectful manner.”
