The funeral took place today of cancer services campaigner Susie Long who died on Friday after she was forced to wait seven months for a colonoscopy to diagnose her bowel cancer.

Ms Long's case came to prominence in January when she spoke of her plight on RTE's Liveline programme, using the name "Rosie".

She had written an email to the show's host Joe Duffy detailing her long wait for a colonoscopy which she blamed on the lack of private health insurance.

Ms Long, originally from Ohio, and resident in Callan, Co Kilkenny said that she and her husband, both employed, could not afford health insurance.

During one of her chemotherapy sessions at St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny she met a private patient who had received a colonoscopy within three days of seeing his GP.

In her email, Ms Long said she believed the lack of private insurance had cost her her life.

In response to her campaign, Minister for Health Mary Harney earlier this year granted funding for a 24-bed day unit at St Luke's Hospital.

Ms Long died on Friday night at Our Lady's Hospice in Harold's Cross, Dublin. A non-religious service was held at Mount Jerome Cemetery this afternoon.
