LONDON - Cotswold villagers yesterday paid a last homage to Laurie Lee, the English writer who immortalised their country-side in works such as Cider With Rosie. Lee died aged 82 last week.

The tiny 1830s Holy Trinity church he had known since childhood in his home at Slad, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, was crowded to overflowing for the brief funeral service. Mr Lee left his village in search of adventure at the age of 19 - to fight against Franco in the Spanish Civil War. He later began writing poetry and books. He leaves his wife, Kathy, and daughter, Jessy.
