New information had come to light relating to the medical fund for the late Mr Brian Lenihan regarding a £25,000 cheque lodged in February 1991, the tribunal was told yesterday.

Mr Jerry Healy SC, for the tribunal, was outlining in an opening statement the subject of the tribunal's sittings over the next two weeks.

He said the AIB had brought to the tribunal's attention a cheque for £25,000 lodged to the Charles Haughey Leader's Account drawn on the account of property developer Mr Philip Monahan.

The cheque, endorsed by Mr Haughey, was lodged on February 13th, 1991. On the same day £12,914.50 was drawn on the account. There was only one outstanding expense at this time and that was a bill for the same sum paid by the Department of Defence for Mr Lenihan's travel expenses.

The tribunal would also hear evidence of Mr James Stafford's involvement in setting up the company, Minmet, then known as Feltrim, promoted by Mr Conor Haughey.

Then the tribunal would deal with one aspect of the operation of Celtic Helicopters, involving the evidence of Mr Joseph Malone. It had already heard evidence from Mr Malone on his involvement in the funding of Celtic Helicopters and his dealings with Mr Haughey in relation to that company.

Mr Healy said the tribunal had obtained further information from Mr Malone. Mr Haughey had invited Mr Malone to invest in Celtic Helicopters and agreed to invest £15,000 in the name of Mr Malone's son. Returning from Abbeville with Mr P.V. Doyle, Mr Malone said, they had discussed the merits or otherwise of making an investment.
