An ESB spokesman told ireland.comthat between 1,000 and 1,500 homes were still without power but that it is expected they will be reconnected this evening, with a a few hundred homes having to wait until later tonight.

"The last few reconnections will be in Wicklow, South Dublin and Kildfare," said the spokesman.

Winds of up to 74mph led to dangerous driving conditions in some areas, with roads blocked by fallen trees and other debris.

Up to 5,000 homes in counties Wexford, Limerick, Donegal, Dublin, Louth, Meath and the area of Portlaoise were without electricity after the very strong winds.
