A senior GAA official was beaten with hammers in a robbery in Co Tyrone believed to involve hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The official, who is believed to have been carrying the ground receipts from yesterday's Ulster senior football championship match between Monaghan and Derry, was attacked near Eglish, a short distance from Dungannon.

The match was played at Casement Park in Belfast, some 50 miles away.

Police said the official's car was slowed by a series of traffic cones near the Eglish roundabout on the main A4 Belfast to Enniskillen road. One of two male hijackers, dressed in a grey anorak and woolly hat, then opened the car door.

The official was beaten with hammers mostly about the legs.

The two men left the scene in a red Peugeot 207 car heading back towards Belfast. The incident happened at about 5.30pm.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said the robbery and assault were "senseless and disgraceful". He appealed for anyone with information to bring it to the PSNI.

The official was treated for his injuries at the scene, and was not believed to be seriously injured.
