The GAA have agreed to re-schedule the 2006 All-Ireland football final to avoid a clash with the Ryder Cup being staged in Ireland for the first time.

The Ryder Cup will be played at the K Club from September 22 nd-24 th, leading to a potential clash with the football showpiece at Croke Park in three years' time.

The football final is traditionally held on the last Sunday in September but after discussions with the Ryder Cup organisers the GAA have agreed to move the date on this occasion.

European Ryder Cup director Richard Hills paid tribute to the GAA and said they had been "most helpful in ensuring that The Ryder Cup and the All-Ireland Football Final will not take place on the same day in the national interest".

Hills also recognised the work done within Ireland to bring golf's blue riband event to these shores.

"The K Club event is the highlight of the ongoing close relationship between The European Tour and Ireland," he added. "It is a natural progression of the public and private sector support in Ireland for The European Tour. Indeed, it is just reward for Ireland to host The Ryder Cup".

Ireland has a rich Ryder Cup tradition with names such as Paul McGinley, Philip Walton and Christy O'Connor Jnr inextricably linked with the tournament. Last year's winning European feature three Irish players with Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and, of course, McGinley securing the trophy at the Belfry.
