An Ulster GAA figure is at the centre of an investigation into abuse allegations, a filed which has been sent by gardai in Monaghan to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The allegations are believed to relate to primary school children, both boys and girls.

Gardai in Monaghan would not give details of the case, but one source confirmed that an investigation had been completed and that a file had been sent to the DPP. The file is' understood to detail allegations going back 20 years or more, and at least some of those alleging abuse are now adults.

In a statement, the GAA in Monaghan said yesterday that reports of the case had come "as a bombshell".
