GARDAI in Galway last night appealed to the mother of a five month old baby girl who was left at a Galway city hospital to make contact with them so help can be given to her and the baby.
The baby girl was found yesterday shortly after 5 p.m. at the CATscan unit of the hospital. She had been left inside the building at University College Hospital.
Staff found the child, dressed in a green jacket and pink trousers, in a Silvercross buggy. The baby was sleeping and covered in blankets.
The discovery was made a short time after a woman telephoned the hospital to tell staff where to find the baby.
The woman, who said she was the mother of the child, told a nurse that she had left the blonde haired baby at the hospital because she felt unable to cope.
The child was given a thorough medical examination by hospital staff and found to be in excellent health and to have been well cared for.
"We are appealing for this young woman to come forward and make contact with us or the hospital and we can say that all help will be given," a hospital spokesman said.
"She can expect sympathetic treatment from us and from the authorities generally because of all the circumstances," he added.
