GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING the murder of a young north Galway man in the city 10 days ago believe the main suspect may have left the jurisdiction.

Kieran Cunningham (20), from Slieve Finn in Co Galway, was stabbed to death in the early hours of June 3rd in the city centre, shortly after leaving a nightclub alone.

His body was released a week ago by the State Pathologist, coroner and Garda Síochána to the family for burial.

Hundreds of people, including staff from the Claregalway retail premises where he worked, attended his funeral.

Garda forensic officers have searched a number of premises in Galway, including a house in Renmore where the suspect is believed to have been staying.

They are keen to talk to a Polish man who, they believe, can assist in their inquiries.

The man and a female partner were captured on CCTV footage in the area of the Karma nightclub, off Williamsgate street, on the night in question. A woman arrested for questioning last week has been released.

One image of the couple, and several of the man, believed to be of Polish nationality, have been released by gardaí in an effort to locate his whereabouts. Ports and airports have also been monitored.

The Polish man who the gardaí wish to talk to is described as aged in his mid-20s, 6ft tall, with dark, tightly cut hair.

In a separate incident, Galway gardaí are investigating an assault on a man in the city centre just three days after the death of Mr Cunningham.

The man sustained serious injuries in the assault between 2am and 3am over a week ago at Newtownsmith.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in that area of the city around that time and who noticed anything suspicious to contact us,” a Garda spokesman said.

Anyone with information on either investigation is asked to contact the incident room at Galway Garda Station on 091–538000, or the Garda confidential line at 1800 666 111.
