Galway stutterd to a win over Sligo in their rescheduled Connacht Senior Football Championship at Pearse Stadium this evening, thanks in a large part to a fine individual performance from 21-year-old Michael Meehan.

Galway opened an 8 point lead at half time by taking full advantage of the strong breeze in their favour. Meehan was particularly effective racking up seven points mostly from long distance.

The 0-13 to 0-5 scoreline flattered Galway and Sligo will have rued missing two clear cut goal opportunities.

Paul McGovern hit the cross bar, while school boy David Kelly put a clear scoring chance wide following an error by the Galway keeper Keane.

Sligo came flying out of the blocks in the second half and used the wind to their favour to score two points in three minutes.

Despite a spirited display by Sligo Galway maintained their lead and Meehan continued to add to his tally, finishing with a total of 11 points.

Despite a 70th minute penalty for Sligo, which substitute Paul Taylor calmly converted, Galway never really looked like reliniquishing their lead, although their fans will be hoping for better performances in later rounds of the Championship.
