GAA – Round-Up:Galway upstaged All-Ireland champions Kilkenny with a 2-21 to 1-23 win in their NHL Division One encounter at Nowlan Park this afternoon. In the day's only top flight football tie Mayo were 2-12 to 0-15 winners against Monaghan.
Kilkenny have now lost three of their six league outings this campaign, despite coming close against the Tribesmen. The defending Division One champions trailed 0-13 to 0-09 at the break with Cyril Donnellan playing a key role for Galway with four points.
It was a different story in the second period as Kilkenny began to swagger. TJ Reid found the Galway goal as the Cats moved into a 1-16 to 1-14 lead.
However, the game was turned on its head when second half substitute Iarla Tannian came on to score two priceless goals for Galway, who are second, one point behind Cork in the standings.
In Castlebar Mayo’s win keeps them top of the NFL Division One on 10 points and with a better points difference than Cork, who also have five wins from six.
Goals in either half from Donal Vaughan and Aidan O'Shea proved crucial for John O’Mahony’s side, who were pushed all the way by a dogged Monaghan side.
The visitors went into the break 0-09 to 1-04 ahead, courtesy of scores from Darren Hughes, Conor McManus and Paul Finlay.
In the second period Mayo levelled through O’Shea’s goal (2-07 to 0-13) before Andy Moran and Tom Parsons scored vital points to secure the win.
