A COUNTY Galway woman has been killed in a swimming accident in Ghana where she had been working as a volunteer with a charity.

Natalie Higgins (24), from Abbeyknockmoy, near Tuam, Co Galway, had arrived in the country over a week ago for a six-month posting working at an orphanage.

It is thought that she and two other people in her group got into difficulties while swimming but while the other two were saved she drowned. Before going to Ghana, she had been involved in TV and film production work in London. She had also worked in the hotel industry in Athenry and had done voluntary work in Tuam with people with special needs.

The Department of Foreign Affairs was yesterday liaising with her family.
