A gang of youths who damaged seven cars and a house when they went on the rampage in Derry put lives at risk, police said today.

Planks of wood and bottles were thrown at the vehicles, breaking windscreens, as they drove through in the Cityside district.

The crowd of youths also damaged bodywork on the cars, which included taxis, during the trouble at Tullyally and Curryneiran just after midnight.

A window was also broken on a house in the area.

PSNI Inspector Stephen Cargin hit out at the mob responsible.

"A number of people were driving their cars when they were attacked," he said. "It's extremely fortunate that no-one was seriously injured as a result of these disturbances. This type of behaviour is unacceptable."

Urging witnesses to contact the police, he added: "I would also appeal to community leaders and anyone with influence to work with police to put this type of activity to an end for good."
