A YOUNG garda who died while on a friend’s stag weekend in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, will be buried tomorrow.

Garda Enda Hughes, based in Dundalk, was found dead in his hotel on Saturday morning. He will be buried after funeral Mass in St Mary of the Rosary Church, Cong, near his family home in Ballinrobe, Co Mayo.

The 29-year-old suffered a bump on his head when he tripped in the street on Friday night in Letterkenny. Gardaí said he was not thought to have been seriously hurt and did not seek medical attention. Garda Hughes fell again – on the fire exit stairs in his hotel – and was assisted to his room by his friends. Next morning, he was found dead.

Garda forensic officers examined his room and an area near the Market Square. His body was removed to Letterkenny General Hospital where a postmortem was carried out yesterday.
