A Donegal Garda sergeant has been acquitted of six charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice and making false statements.

Sgt John White of Dreenan, Ballybofey was found not guilty at Letterkenny Ciruit Court of lying to the Carty team investigating Garda corruption in Donegal.

Sgt John White was charged with three counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice and three of making false statements to gardaí in 1998. It is alleged Sgt White got Mr Bernard Conlon to make false statements implicating two of the McBrearty family in a crime in July 1998.

The charges were based on the statement of a Garda informant already convicted of making the same false statements.
