The Garda Air Support Unit's (ASU) fixed-wing spotter unit, which was grounded because of the risk of a serious or fatal accident, will be back in service shortly, the Minister for Justice said yesterday.

Mr O'Donoghue said concerns were raised about the safety of the aircraft, and a safety audit was undertaken by the Air Corps. "We have received a copy of the report, which we are looking at in the context of the Garda air support unit," he said.

He had been told by the Garda that there was no foundation for a claim that crew members were in danger of falling out of the aircraft because of a faulty door. The air support unit would be expanded by the addition of a second helicopter.
