A garda sergeant, arrested following allegations of sexual assault made by a woman juror the murder trial of Martin McDonagh has been released without charge.

A file on the case has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

McDonagh (30) was sentenced on Saturday for the murder of another member of the Travelling community in Co Sligo. He was given a life sentence.

The sergeant was arrested in the Bridewell garda station in Dublin and brought to Dún Laoghaire Garda station for questioning. He was released without charge this morning.

It is understood that the woman made a complaint to gardaí after the end of the trial on Saturday.

It is believed she alleged that an attempt was made to influence her decision in the trial on Friday night.

It is understood that the woman made an allegation that the attempt to influence her decision was followed by an indecent or sexual assault.
