This weekend marks the beginning of a major Garda traffic policing operation on the main routes to and from Dublin.

The Garda said there would be a highly visible presence on the Dublin-to-Galway road, with checkpoints, unmarked cars and speed cameras.

The other routes which will be targeted during the two week operation, involving all 531 offices of the new Garda Traffic Corps, are Dublin to Cork, Limerick, Wexford, Castlebar and the Dublin-to-Belfast road as far as the Border at Dromad.

The operation will particularly focus on dangerous driving and drink driving.

Official National Safety Council and Garda figures released today reveal that some 100 people have died on the roads since the start of the year, seven more than for the same period last year.

Seven people have died in road accidents in the past week alone.

In other traffic news, the main sporting fixture affecting traffic at the weekend will be tomorrow's rugby. The Heineken Cup quarter final between Leinster and Leicester kicks off at 5.15pm.

A furniture fair continues at the RDS, which will also add to traffic in the Ballsbridge area.

Rail travellers should note that upgrade works continue on the Dart line between Pearse and Howth/Malahide. There will be no weekend services on that section of the line. However, additional buses will operate on Dublin Bus routes adjacent to the Dart line.

Full Dart services will operate between Pearse and Bray/Greystones.

Iarnród Éireann has also begun a new 6.30am service from Killarney to Cork. The service will run non-stop to Mallow where it will connect with the early morning train from Cork to Dublin at 7.22am. A new service will also operate at 9.10am from Cork, serving all stations to Killarney.
