A garda appeared in court yesterday charged with corruption connected with the alleged quashing of a drink-driving case.
Garda Séamus Doherty (40) of the Terenure Traffic Corps, was charged with seven counts in relation to the accepting of bribes, and a second man, Mr Ian Bloomer (29), Oaklands Park, Ballsbridge, Dublin, was charged with three counts of giving a bribe.
Judge John O'Neill at the Dublin District Court was told the defence was seeking an adjournment to examine the evidence in the cases.
Garda Doherty faces four counts under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906 as amended by the Ethics in Public Office Act 1995, of corruptly, receiving, soliciting or accepting £500 (€634) from Mr John Tobin in St Peter's Road, Walkinstown, in December 1999.
He also faces three charges of corruptly receiving £150 (€190) from Mr Bloomer between October and December 1999 in the Galloping Green pub, Stillorgan.
Mr Bloomer is charged with corruptly paying £150 (€190) to Garda Doherty for him not to carry out his duty under the Road Traffic Act in relation to a drink-driving case.
Mr Darragh Robinson, solicitor for Mr Bloomer, said the defence had received "a vast amount" of evidence in the case and would need time to examine it.
Judge O'Neill agreed to adjourn both cases to February 27th and remanded both men on continuing bail.
