Garda cleared of reckless driving

The driver of a Garda squad car has been cleared of reckless driving

The driver of a Garda squad car has been cleared of reckless driving. A Circuit Court judge had blamed the "recklessness" of Det Sgt Eamonn O'Reilly, Dun Laoghaire, for an accident in which a bus ran into the back of his patrol car at Foxrock, Dublin.

The Circuit Court had thrown out a claim by Garda William Wildes, a passenger in the squad car, for damages for personal injuries against Dublin Bus. But the decision was overturned by the High Court and Garda Wildes was awarded £6,000. Mr Justice Kinlen held that his decision should govern liability in any other personal injury claims arising out of the accident.

Yesterday the driver, Det Sgt O'Reilly, settled his action for personal injuries against Dublin Bus for an undisclosed amount.
