A CORK garda who has been charged with two counts of criminal damage is to appear before a court in the city this morning. He is accused of damaging two looks and a carpet at a house in the city.

Garda James Patrick O'Sullivan was charged at a special sitting of Cork District Court yesterday evening. He was arrested at about 8.30 a.m. yesterday and held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows detention for up to 12 hours without charge.

At 5.30 p.m. yesterday he was taken to a special sitting of Cork District Court and charged with causing criminal damage at a house at Robinscourt, Togher, on October 26th last.

The damage was to a carpet worth £500 and to a doorlock worth £11.49, the court was told. He was further charged with causing criminal damage to a padlock worth £4.99 at the same address on the following day, October 27th.

The damage was committed contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Damage Act, 1991, Judge Uinsionn MacGruairc was told.

Garda O'Sullivan (9), who has been 30 years in the force and has been stationed at MacCurtain Street station, was released on his own bail of £100 to appear at Cork District Court again this morning.
