Gardaí are investigating the armed raid on a bank in Carrick-on-Suir yesterday. The raid took place just after 5 p.m. yesterday when a red Toyota jeep carrying three men rammed the door of the Allied Irish Bank on Main Street.
According to a Garda spokesperson, the gang gained access to the bank through a hole they created with a custom-made battering ram attached to the rear of the car.Two men then entered the bank and demanded cash. One was armed with a pistol and the other with a sledgehammer. The driver of the car was armed with a sawn-off shotgun.
Two gardaí arrived at the bank and confronted the gang, who fled the scene. They left Carrick-on-Suir and headed in the Dungarvan direction with the gardaí in pursuit. Checkpoints were mounted in the area last night. No one was injured in the raid, no shots were fired and no cash was taken.
