Gardaí in Cork have launched a joint investigation with experts from the Health Service Executive into the circumstances in which an eight month old baby suffered head injuries which have left him in a critical condition in hospital.

Gardaí launched the investigation when they were contacted by the HSE South after the baby was admitted to Cork University Hospital on August 15th and doctors became concerned over the type of injuries that he had suffered.

The little boy, who is from the south Cork area, was yesterday described as being in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of Cork University Hospital by a HSE South spokeswoman.

Supt Barry McPolin of Togher Garda station, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that gardaí were working closely with experts from the HSE, but stressed that the investigation is still at a very early stage and gardaí were handling the matter with sensitivity.
