The dangers of underage and binge drinking have been highlighted in a new video sponsored by the Cider Industry Council.

Launched today by Garda Chief Superintendent Pat Cregg, the video will be distributed to juvenile liaison officers, teachers and youth groups throughout Ireland.

The 25-minute video is aimed at young people aged between 12 and 17 and has four sections, each dealing with a specific area related to underage drinking and the possible outcomes.

Speaking at the launch today, Chief Supt Cregg said: "We must encourage the youth to explore all options and choices available to them so that they themselves can learn, for we can no longer simply lecture to them.

"It is up to young people to take responsibility for their lifestyle choices and ... to become aware of all the facts, the risks and consequences relating to alcohol consumption and especially to alcohol abuse."

The video comes in four parts with dramatised scenes featuring young people depicting the result of underage and binge drinking.

Mr Peter McKimm of the Cider Industry Council said: "This video will not offer young people definitive advice, but will help them to discuss the various issues associated with drinking alcohol and encourage them to be better informed."
