Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to this morning's fatal car crash in Co Monaghan

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to this morning's fatal car crash in Co Monaghan. Three people died when the cars in which they were travelling were involved in a collision on the main Dublin to Derry Road.

Gardaí have named the three who died as 35-year-old Micheal McGeough from Main street in Carrickmacross,  42-year-old Angela Woods, also from Carrickmacross and 20-year-old Kris Cumiskey from Silverbridge in Co Armagh.

The accident happened on the N2 near Carrickmacross at around 3.30am.

Mr McGeough and Ms Woods were travelling together and Mr Cumiskey was the sole occupant of a second car when the crash happened.

Coroner Dr Mary Flanagan, visited the site of the accident and the victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Garda Inspector James Marks said one of the cars was from the North.  "One vehicle contained a male and the other vehicle contained a male and a female," he said.

Gardaí closed part of the road while a detailed examination of the scene was carried outand the victims were taken to Cavan General Hospital for post mortem examinations.
