Gardaí have appeal for witnesses to an assault in which a young Irishman died while holidaying in Gran Canaria.

Mr Daniel O'Callaghan (24), from Rathmines, Dublin, was staying at the Maspalomas resort on the with friends on Saturday, April 26th. On that evening Mr O'Callaghan left a club at 2.30 a.m. where he had gone with his friends to return to his hotel.

On the way he was attacked and mugged. He was found at 4 a.m. unconscious in a laneway between the Greenfield and Green Garden Apartments, in Playa del Ingles.

He had suffered serious head injuries and died in hospital on May 13th.

Gradaí today appealed for anyone who may have been holidaying or working in the area on the 27th and might have seen Mr O'Callaghan between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. to contact the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 1800-250025 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111.

A spokesman for the Garda said investigating officers have travelled to Gran Canaria as part of the investigation and that they are liasing with Spanish authorities. He admitted that they have not identified a suspect.
