Gardaí investigating the murder of an 80-year-old man in Dublin's inner city last weekend have today made an appeal for people using a city centre taxi rank between 12.30 and 1.30 am on the night of his death to come forward.

Vincent Plunkett was found in a pool of blood in the bedroom of his home at Robinson Court, Cork Street, Dublin 8 last Monday at around noon. He had been stabbed several times.

There was no sign of forced entry to his home when he was found, leading detectives to believe his assailant was known to him.

He was last seen the previous evening near his home at 9pm.

Today's appeal for anyone using the Aston Quay taxi rank by O'Connell Bridge coincides with the replayed Laois versus Mayo Gaelic Football match at Croke Park this afternoon.

The original drawn match was played at Croke Park last Sunday - the night of Mr Plunkett's murder - and gardaí are hopeful people with relevant information may be back in the capital for today's replay.
