The search was continuing in north Dublin last night for the mother of a new-born baby boy whose body was discovered yesterday in builders' rubble which had been transported from Coolock to Swords.

Preliminary post-mortem results revealed there were no marks on the body. However, a full post-mortem had yet to be completed last night by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, at the City Morgue.

Supt Noel McLoughlin, who is leading the investigation, said that gardaí were satisfied the body had been left at Newtown Industrial Estate, Coolock, and they were working on the theory that the mother was from that area. He appealed for the woman to come forward, as she could be in need of medical attention.

The body was found wrapped in a blanket by workers at a registered tipping site at Newbarn, Kilsallaghan, Swords. The workers were moving earth which had just been deposited by a truck when the discovery was made shortly before noon.

Gardaí estimated that the child was two or three days old when he died. They believe that he may have been buried up to a week ago at the industrial estate, which is being cleared for a new building. The sites in Coolock and Swords have been sealed off for examination.

At the Swords site, four photographers and a broadcast journalist were arrested yesterday afternoon "for offences under the Public Order Act", according to a Garda statement. All five were later released and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Anyone with information on the baby's death is asked to contact Coolock Garda station at (01) 666 4200 or to call the Garda Confidential Line (1800 666 111).
