Limerick gardai have made another appeal to the mother of a dead baby girl found in a black plastic bag to come forward, as she may be in need of medical attention. Supt Tony Kenneally of Henry Street station, who is heading the investigation, said they were concerned for her health, both mental and physical.

One of the possibilities was that the mother was young. "No arrangements will be made for the baby until the investigation has been completed and both the identity of the baby and her mother established," he said. Sgt Anne Marie McMahon said the mother would be treated with compassion. "We are very concerned that she is in need of urgent medical attention and we'd like to help her as much as we can."

After the post-mortem by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, gardai said it was not possible to say yet if the baby had been stillborn and further tests were required.
