Gardaí in Wexford have arrested nineteen members of the Travelling community following what gardaí described as a 'riot' near Wexford Town last night.

Those arrested were charged and released on bail to appear before New Ross tomorrow.

The nineteen men were charged with various charges including criminal damage and other public order offences.

Last night's events follow a dispute in Wexford last week when management at a hotel in Wexford town and some local pubs closed after more than 400 Travellers moved onto a Department of Marine site in the town.

The borough council swimming pool complex also closed because staff could not cope with the unprecedented demand for toilets and other facilities.

As the stand-off continued, some publicans in the town closed their doors, claiming it would be cheaper than face prosecution for refusing entry to Travellers.

The Travellers are understood to be from England and Limerick.
