Gardaí have begun separate murder investigations following the deaths of two men in Dublin since Tuesday. One man was shot in the Liberties area on Wednesday night and the previous day the body of a man was found in Inchicore.
A 23 year-old man Paul James Warren was shot in the chest in Gray's pub, Newmarket Square, formerly known as the Red Lion, by two armed men who entered the premises wearing balaclavas. It has been described as a gangland killing.
It is believed three shots were fired. The two men then escaped in a silver or white car in the direction of Cork Street. The deceased is well known to gardaí.
Around 20 people are believed to have been in Gray's pub at the time watching Wednesday night's Champions League football matches.
Gardaí began questioning the customers yesterday.
Mr Warren was from St Teresa's Gardens, a flat complex in the south-west of the city. Gardaí said similar type murders have occurred in the area in the recent years.
Commenting on the murder, Labour Party justice spokesman Mr Joe Costello said the Minister for Justice, Mr McDowell, is "presiding over the worst period of gangland shootings and murders in the history of the State. I do not underestimate the difficulties the Gardaí face in combating these vicious gangs, but clearly the current tactics are not working and a review is needed," he said.
Gardaí at Kevin Street are investigating, and have appealed to anyone who has information to contact them on 01 6669434 or 6669400.
In a separate incident, gardaí in Kilmainham have begun a murder investigation into the death of a 41 year-old man in Inchicore on Tuesday night.
The body of Seán Toomey, a father of two, from Swords, Co Dublin was found in a house on Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore shortly before 11 p.m. A post- mortem examination showed he died from head injuries following a violent assault.
An incident room has also been set up and can be contacted on 01 6669711.
Last year 21 people were killed in murders in the Republic in which guns were used.
