Gardaí believe a teenager shot twice in the head near playing pitches at a GAA club yesterday afternoon was targeted by a friend with whom he had recently been involved in a fist-fight.
However, gardaí believe he was shot by a former friend rather than as part of any wider dispute. They have identified a chief suspect and he was being questioned last night. The shooting occurred at 3pm yesterday in Inchicore in Dublin’s south inner city.
The injured teenager was orphaned as a child. He was brought up by a relative.
The victim was wounded twice in the head and once in the neck. Gardaí believe the weapon used was a low-calibre handgun.
He staggered a long distance and called an ambulance using his mobile phone.
The 18-year-old had just crossed a footbridge over Con Colbert Road that links Memorial Park and Liffey Gaels GAA club playgrounds when he was ambushed by a number of men on foot, one of whom opened fire.
There was a large amount of blood from a walkway at the side of the Liffey and at Memorial Park, over the footbridge and into the GAA club, where he was found wounded.
A wide crime scene was sealed off for examination.
