Gardai investigating the death of a young man in Eyrecourt, Co Galway, two days ago have yet to rule out foul play.

Mr John Rooney (21), of Eyrecourt Mall, was found dead by his mother in a bedroom at their family home shortly before 1 p.m. on Monday.

She called the gardaí after noticing her son had suffered facial injuries.

A initial post-mortem carried out at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe early yesterday failed to establish the cause of Mr Rooney's death.

The assistant state pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, was carrying out further tests last night.

Gardaí said the results of the tests may not be available for some time, adding it could be several days before they establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death.

One avenue of inquiry centres on an incident in the village early on Monday in which Mr Rooney is believed to have been involved.

A fight involving several people is said to have taken place on the village's main street sometime between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Mr Rooney is believed to have intervened and may have received the facial injuries as a result.

Gardaí are also investigating the possibility that Mr Rooney fell independently on his way home from the village, where he had been socialising with friends on Sunday night.

His family house is located just a few hundred metres away from the main street.

Mr Rooney's exact movements are now being traced with the help of local residents.

One of four children whose parents run a small business in the village, Mr Rooney was said to be a popular member of the local community and to have been active in the local soccer club.

Garda technical and forensic experts were yesterday carrying out their work. Gardaí were also conducting door-to-door inquiries in the village.

Investigating gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the reported fight on Monday morning to come forward.

Anyone with information can contact Loughrea Garda station, which is co-ordinating the investigation, at (091) 841 222.
