GARDAÍ IN Limerick arrested and questioned a man at the weekend following the seizure of a handgun and ammunition.
The weapon was discovered by gardaí after they called to a house at Sean Heuston Place in the city, at 7.15am on Saturday.
“Gardaí were called to the house . . . they had received an alert of some kind of incident involving parties in the house. After entering the house they found the gun and a small quantity of ammunition,” a garda spokesman added.
The Garda source said that he couldn’t comment on whether or not the gun was loaded when it was found.
The man was detained at Henry Street Garda station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
The house was sealed off to allow gardaí to carry out a more detailed technical examination but they said no other items of potential evidential value were found.
On Saturday night the man was released without charge and a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions on the matter, said a Garda spokesman.
